If you plan on visiting New Zealand, then you need to include Wellington on your list of places to visit. This city is the capital of the country and is located in the southern portion of the North Island. The following are just a few of the things you should consider visiting while in the city.
Visit the top of Mount Victoria
The top of Mount Victoria is the one place where you can see the entire city as well as the harbor, and even nearby smaller islands. You can bring your lunch with you and have a picnic, while you enjoy the view of the ocean and the boats moving in and out of the harbor from the hillside area. You will have to be careful if you bring a hat while you are there. Mount Victoria has a reputation for its strong winds.
Ride the cable cars
The cable cars in Wellington are more than 100 years old and are still in good working condition. Over the course of their existence, they have become an icon, and many people associate this city with them. There is only one route with the cable cars. It stretches from Lambton Quay to Kelburn. Not only is the trip back and forth scenic, but you can also visit the Botanical Gardens and the Cable Car Museum along the way.
Visit the Weta Workshop
This is a special effects company that does work for many Hollywood movies. Of course, they are best known for their work on the Lord of the Rings movies. In fact, much of the filming for the Tolkien movies was done in this area of New Zealand, and it was these movies that put Wellington on the map. Many tourists come to this city solely because of their love for the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movies. While walking around the countryside here in Wellington, you may think you are in the Shire.
Because of the location of Wellington, this city is often missed by tourists. It is a bit out of the way compared to other areas of the country. However, it is well worth the trip. The scenery alone is worth visiting the city. One bit of advice is to make sure you get a wellington car hire. Having your own transportation will enable you to see more of the city in a quicker time frame.
