Steps by which car manufacturers can effectively implement green innovation strategy

The car we once knew is dead, and that’s because the industry is changing. Advanced technology is redefining the basic purpose of a vehicle. Car manufacturers are implementing green innovations into their products, thus triggering a new automotive era. There are roughly 1 billion cars spread across the globe. In 2012, the production exceeded 84 million cars. We’re currently witnessing an increasing international demand, and experts estimate that we’ll have 2 billion by 2020.

When the assembly line that belonged to Henry Ford was aimed at mass producing cars for the population, the philosophy was to make vehicles for personal freedom and mobility. Cars did just that for about 100 years, and in many countries they’re still just a means of transportation. And yet, there’s a lot more to the industry nowadays than meets the eyes. Most of today’s releases are no longer used just for driving. People living in mega cities like Jakarta, Tokyo or Sao Paulo, the use of the automobile doesn’t resume to freedom or personal mobility. And that’s because driving a car destroys the quality of the air, thus leading to health concerns, fatal accident and waste. This is where the green concept comes in.

Green cars – a necessary innovation

Eco-friendly cars are no longer synonymous with luxury. They’ve become necessary in a world poisoned by carbon footprint and damaging emissions. Manufacturers are realizing that sooner or later this “trend” will lead the world of the automobile industry. The 21st century is bringing new pressures and concerns to the way enterprises innovate. In the past, the term “innovation” was tied to creating something meant to exceed people’s expectations; something pioneering and groundbreaking no matter the cost. Right now, cost is everything.

Today’s most profound environmental concerns are somehow linked to the auto industry. We want fast, affordable, beautiful cars; but we don’t want them to pollute the air we breathe. In Europe for example, 9 million tons is generated annually from car waste. Therefore, land availability puts a lot of pressure on prices meant to be used for waste disposal. This “forces” auto makers to come up with cars that don’t pollute. Sadly, the technology doesn’t come cheap.

A better understanding of green innovation and innovation management

“Green innovations” are defined as processes or products meant to have a higher degree of sustainability. This higher degree is attained by minimizing environmental impacts through the creation of positive impacts. When looking at sustainability and environmental-related reports from today’s major car companies, we sense a general conclusion: that these multi-million dollar enterprises are struggling to make green technology become more recognized.

We are not people driving more eco-friendly cars? In spite of the fact that the main focus is the car – which is the center product – green initiatives and technologies go beyond auto design. Fortunately, the industry is enjoying great exposure. Increasingly more people want to know about green cars; they want to understand the concept and at the same time help reduce carbon footprint and damaging emissions.

Future strategies

The strategy adopted by most car manufacturers hasn’t been enough to make the green movement more effective. Developers should find a way to re-evaluate their ideas and choose more sustainable ways to sell, use, produce and dispose of cars on a global level. Through the evaluation and understanding of stakeholders and their authority, car manufacturers may be able to identify which drivers might be interested in the eco-friendly innovation. For instance, motorists have been pushing for increased fuel efficiency for years now.

However, for a company to listen it has to consider new motivations like green technology, environmental reputation, and resource paucity as an important part of their strategy. The fact that only a few companies are centering their attention on the green concept is showing us that further delays will follow. The technology is not advanced enough to compete with internal combustion engines; and it’s not cheap either. And yet some companies like Toyota, Hyundai and Porsche engine rebuild are not giving up. There’s hope and the future of green cars is bright! All we need to do is waiting for more people to realize that if we don’t do anything this planet will be doomed.
